Romney: Russians could target U.S. infrastructure, “cripple” economy
Over the weekend, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) warned that Russian cyber actors could “cripple” the U.S. economy. “What Russia has done is put in place a capacity to potentially cripple us in terms of our electricity, our power, our water, our communications,” he said. “This is the same thing you can do in a wartime setting, so it’s extraordinarily dangerous, and an outrageous affront on our sovereignty and one that’s going to have to be met with a strong response.” (AC: This is not news — Russia’s had this demonstrated capability for years if not longer — but I bring this up because we could see different policies develop under a Biden administration. Transition team chief of staff Ron Klain said in an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation that a Biden administration would act “to degrade the capacity of foreign actors to launch these kinds of attacks” through sanctions. While Klain said that he wanted to be clear that “it’s just sanctions,” there’s likely to be a cyber response, which may not be publicized, to deter future cyber actions of this magnitude. One U.S. intelligence official over the weekend said this Solar Winds Orion attack was the worst in U.S. history. It appears that U.S. officials have struggled to ascertain the exact size and scope of this attack, but it’s clear that it will have lasting implications. This is somewhat reminiscent of Chinese security organizations who were able to break into CIA communications systems in China between 2010 and 2012. Chinese security agents then worked to arrest or kill nearly 20 Chinese agents that had been recruited by CIA. Due to the pervasive nature of Chinese access, the Agency then reportedly had to rebuild its communications systems from the ground up. As a result of the Solar Winds Orion hack, according to some U.S. officials, entire communications systems will have to be dismantled and rebuilt to ensure that potentially ongoing access points are blocked. – S.C.)
So MY comment is…. After all the “Russia Russia Russia” hysteria of the past 4 years, why in the world should we believe it any more now? I’d say it more likely involves CHINA!!!! They are the ones with the most to lose.
